Daily verdict email only us
The morning signal: budget status, spend-at-most today, cash outlook, and alerts — delivered, not buried in a nav bar. Hourly sync sweeps keep the number honest all day. This is the product.
Other apps wait for you to open them. Oikonome sends one email every morning: on budget or over, and the number to hit today. One hosted plan at $6.99/mo, or self-host free — no feature gates, ever.

Built for the founder’s own household first — it ran on decades of real history, every morning, before it ever had a landing page.
This is the product. Not a dashboard habit. Open the email → know where you stand → get on with your day. Critical hits will also fire as push alerts you configure (coming soon).
Why Oikonome
Most finance apps are charts you have to remember to look at. Oikonome leads with the answer — delivered to your inbox — and backs it with deeper forecasting and import than apps costing twice as much.
On budget or over. One number for today. Price creep and odd charges called out. Retention without habit formation — no other consumer app makes this the product.
$6.99/mo hosted, or run the entire product yourself for $0. Both run the identical app — hosted only adds connected-bank capacity and pricier data feeds.
60-day cash forecast with card-payoff scenarios. Retirement replay against a century of real markets. Decades of import — Mint, Quicken, YNAB, CSV — not 90 days of API.
Daily verdict email as the core product loop — not a digests afterthought buried in settings.
Full-feature self-host and a hosted option. A subscription is a choice here, not a requirement.
Retirement sim with historical market replay — not a single rosy line chart pretending certainty.
Cash forecast that models statement vs full card payoff — the decision households actually make.
What makes it unique
Most apps dump a feed and a pie chart. Oikonome is a steward: it proposes structure, explains the verdict, and stays quiet when nothing interesting happened.
Auto bill find
After history lands (sync or import), Bills runs detection from real cadence and amounts. You get a queue of proposals — rent, utilities, subscriptions, paychecks — approve or reject each one. No typing every merchant by hand.
When things change
Subscriptions hike. Categories need a nudge. The plan should explain itself. Oikonome surfaces change instead of hoping you notice.
Envelopes · monthly & annual
Not every cost is “$X every month.” Insurance, domains, vet bills, car repairs arrive in lumps. Oikonome envelopes do both shapes:
Variable spending only for OVER/UNDER. Bills live in the plan and forecast — paid rent doesn’t scream “over budget.”
Spend at most today = (budget − spent) ÷ days left. Heart of Today and the daily email.
Bars on one dollar scale: spent, still to come, bills awaiting due date. Overspend literally grows past the budget length.
Food + Everything-else defaults, plus custom buckets you carve out — with history-based suggestions you approve.
Line items detail a charge; the total still rules the verdict. No mystery re-bucketing.
Two sources for one account? Healthiest wins; shadows keep syncing for failover without bloating totals.

What you get
Not a half-built feed. Not a credit-score upsell. Auto bills, envelopes, Amazon vendor detail, community scripts, suggestions, hints, forecast depth, the morning email — and a public backlog you can request features on and vote for what lands next.
The morning signal: budget status, spend-at-most today, cash outlook, and alerts — delivered, not buried in a nav bar. Hourly sync sweeps keep the number honest all day. This is the product.
Detects recurring bills and paychecks from your history. Approve or reject proposals — don’t rebuild your life from blank forms.
Amount drift, price creep, double charges, “why OVER” reasons, budget suggestions from history — you stay in control of every accept.
Caps for monthly habits; year pools for insurance, domains, car care. Lumpy life stops faking overspending.
$6.99/mo · $69/yr hosted. Or self-host the full product for $0. A budgeting app shouldn’t be a line item you resent.
Mint exports, Quicken, YNAB, OFX, any CSV. Decades of history in one ledger — so forecasts aren’t guessing from last month of bank API.
Shared-scale bars for spent vs still-to-come vs bills awaiting due date. Income, budgets, carve-outs, and savings in one Budget page.
Build the rules: email or push digests of transactions on your schedule, plus critical alerts (amount over X, double charge, unknown merchant) that fire at sync time. Self-hosted instances can send these as texts too. You’re not glued to the app.
Snap a receipt (photo or PDF) — a vision model parses it, auto-crops and cleans it up, and files it on the transaction. Bank-check photos parse the payee, amount, and memo, then categorize themselves.
A conversational assistant over your own ledger — “what did we spend on the kitchen remodel?” Answered locally. No financial data leaves your box.
Tag accounts and transactions by household owner, then filter spending reports and net worth by person. Shared finances without losing whose is whose.
Every categorization rule is visible — yours, model-learned, and built-in — searchable with provenance. Edit or disable any learned rule; it becomes yours. No black-box auto-categorizer.
Native iOS and Android over the same API. Until then the web app works on your phone — and the daily email needs no app at all.
See whether cash runs out before it happens. Card-payoff scenarios (statement vs full balance) the big apps skip.
Replay your plan against a century of real market paths — not a single optimistic line chart pretending certainty.
SimpleFIN, BYO Plaid trial, CSV/OFX always. Aggregator-agnostic so self-hosters aren’t locked to our vendor.
Self-host stays dark. No ads, no selling data. Fair Source so you can read the code — trust you verify, not marketing claims.
Plug in host-side collectors for sources aggregators miss — Amazon orders, retirement CSVs, broker APIs. Credentials stay on your machine; scoped tokens push into the ledger. Amazon orders even expand the “AMAZON.COM” blob into line-items and categories.
Cash ahead
Most apps show “what you spent.” Oikonome projects what you’ll have — including how you pay the card.

It does the work
You shouldn’t have to audit every line. Oikonome watches recurring merchants, calls out what changed in the morning email today — and, coming soon, will push the ones you care about the second sync sees them.
Beyond the bank API
Some money lives outside Plaid: a retailer order history, a 401(k) CSV portal, a broker with a private API. Oikonome’s answer is a documented plug-in contract — not a closed scraper we own.
Built with you
Oikonome is Fair Source and community-shaped — not a black-box roadmap decided in a private Slack. If you use it, you can steer it.
Open a GitHub issue with what you need and why. Bug reports, UX notes, and “I wish it did X” all count — we read them.
👍 react on issues you care about. Higher signal rises. The public issue list is the priority queue — you help pick what gets added next.
PRs welcome for product fixes and for community-scripts/ collectors others can run. Docs and tests land with the change — see CONTRIBUTING.
Feature ideas live as issues — searchable, linkable, voteable. No closed “we’ll think about it.”
Ship a collector others need (Amazon, payroll portals, regional banks). The contract is documented so yours can be shared safely.
No feature gates. If it lands in the product, self-host gets it the same day as hosted.
GitHub issues for bugs & features · PRs for code · security@ for vulnerabilities. One open surface.

Pricing
Two ways to run the same app, and no tiers in either. Self-host it free forever with your own aggregator keys, or let us run it for $6.99 a month. Hosted sells setup, backups and bank plumbing — never features.
Free forever, no strings — donations keep it that way.
No feature gates anywhere — the app is identical either way. Hosted is capped at 6 connected institutions, because bank connections are the one cost that scales with you. One connection = one bank, card, or brokerage login, however many accounts it holds. Outgrow the cap and you can self-host the whole thing free with your own aggregator. Nobody gets locked out of their own money. Alerts arrive by email and push; text alerts aren’t part of the hosted plan, since SMS bills per message, per person — self-host can send them with your own Twilio.

FAQ
They optimize for in-app engagement. We optimize for a morning email you can act on without opening an app, and ship cash-forecast, payoff, and retirement depth they skip — plus full self-host, which they don’t offer.
Because the economics allow it. Self-hosters carry their own costs, our categorization runs on bundled local models instead of metered APIs, and there’s no growth team to feed. $6.99/mo · $69/yr is a price we can keep — not an intro rate.
After sync or import, Oikonome scans cadence and amounts, then proposes recurring bills and paychecks. You approve or reject each proposal. When a subscription settles at a new amount, amount drift can update the bill automatically (with an audit entry). Hand-edited amounts stay protected.
Monthly caps a habit each calendar month (e.g. dining). Annual gives one pool for the year for lumpy costs (insurance, domains, car care) so renewals don’t look like overspending. Overflow past the pool still counts as normal variable spend — clean math.
Hints surface price creep, doubles, and calm “why OVER” reasons. Budget suggest uses a trailing ~6‑month median per bucket; you approve each number before it sticks. Nothing silent-overwrites your plan.
Actual is excellent envelope budgeting. We’re built around forecasting + the daily verdict + deep history import. Different job; many people use both kinds of tools for different reasons.
No. Self-host is 100% of features, forever. Hosted sells convenience (we run servers, backups, bank plumbing), not locked features.
So you can self-host everything forever while the project stays sustainable. Commercial free-riding is restricted; after two years each release becomes Apache.
Not yet — honest Y2 roadmap. The daily email is designed so you don’t need an app habit on day one. Web is first-class.
Private beta is invite-only. Request access; we’ll email when a seat opens. Self-host from GitHub when you’re ready to run Docker yourself.
Yes — demo.oikonome.com is the real product running on a synthetic household: three years of history, bills mid-detection, an over-budget month to poke at. No signup, one click in, and everything resets on the hour. The screenshots on this page are taken from it.
Yes. File a feature request as a GitHub issue, 👍 react on the ones you want most, and open PRs when you can ship a fix. That public signal is how we prioritize what gets added next — not a private corporate backlog.

The Spending report ranks merchants with total spend, visit count (so you can see average), and a monthly trend chart. When Amazon orders are synced via the community script, line-items and Amazon categories expand the single “Amazon.com” card charge into what you actually bought.
